Cathy Thomas is the Manager for the Community and Clinical Connections for Prevention and Health Branch with the Chronic Disease and Injury Section, NC Division of Public Health. Cathy has experience in school health and public health. She has been a classroom teacher, school health coordinator, and assistant principal. In her public health role, she served as Executive Director for the North Carolina Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Health as well as Manager for 10 years for the Physical Activity and Nutrition Branch, both with the NC Division of Public Health. She also worked as a local health educator in Greene and Wilson Counties. Cathy was a founding member of Eat Smart, Move More, North Carolina, a statewide movement that promotes healthy eating and physical activity for all North Carolinians. She employs the motto that “none of us is as strong as all of us” and seeks every opportunity to form partnerships with a variety of agencies to promote programs, projects and initiatives focused on increasing healthy behaviors.
Cathy is the co-author/developer of a host of programs and tools to enhance physical activity and healthy eating opportunities for early childhood, school, community, faith, home and health care settings. She is the co-author of the national award winning Color Me Healthy, a curriculum that helps young children eat smart and move more. She and colleagues created Eat Smart, Move More, Weigh Less, a 15-week evidence-based weight management program, that is being used across the state and nation in both in-person and online formats. A native of North Carolina, Cathy received her Bachelor of Science in School and Community Health Education and her Masters of Education with a Supervisor’s Certification from East Carolina University.
