Melissa serves as the Built Environment Coordinator for the Community and Clinical Connections for Prevention and Health Branch, focusing on the CDC’s State Physical Activity and Nutrition (SPAN) program. In this role she supports built environment strategies to support health and increase physical activity and works with the CCCPH communications team on efforts relating to physical activity and nutrition. After earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Public Health from East Carolina University, Melissa worked as a regional coordinator for the North Carolina Community Transformation Grant Project in Western North Carolina. Melissa is pursuing her Master of Public Administration concentrating in Health Administration at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. Most recently she served as a regional coordinator for the Obesity, Diabetes, Heart Disease, and Stroke Prevention Project, focused on implementing policy and environmental change strategies to increase opportunities for healthy eating and physical activity. She has extensive experience implementing worksite and faith-based health promotion initiatives, previously leading a county wide worksite wellness coalition, and working with the Faithful Families Thriving Communities Program. She enjoys being a part of supporting community change to increase health equity and provide North Carolinians, for generations to come, the opportunity to live a healthy life regardless of where they live. In her free time Melissa enjoys getting outside, exploring new foods and places, and spending time with her family, friends, and her dog, Rocky.
